TIGER GEARS UP, NICKLAUS PREPARES TO SAY FAREWELL AT THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP TO AIR LIVE ON XM SATELLITE RADIO JULY 14-17
Washington D.C., July 12, 2005 -- XM Satellite Radio will broadcast The Open Championship, also known in the U.S. as the British Open, from Thursday, July 14, to Sunday, July 17, live from the historic Old Course at St. Andrews on XM Channel 146.
XM will provide in-depth coverage of The Open, the world's oldest golf championship, from Scotland for XM's 4.4 million-plus subscribers across the continental U.S.
The live broadcast will air from 2:00 am to 2:00 pm ET each day on XM Channel 146, with a recap by Pure Golf Radio from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm, followed by highlights of the day's broadcast from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm ET.
Tiger Woods won The Open at St. Andrews in 2000 on his way to winning four consecutive major championships. Now he returns to the "home of golf" in pursuit of his second major in 2005.
The Open will also mark Jack Nicklaus' last appearance in a major competition. Nicklaus, who won at St. Andrews in 1970 and 1978, wrote in the July edition of Golf Digest magazine: "I love St. Andrews - the way it feels and what it represents, and the way the galleries there have accepted me. I always felt like I was theirs."
"This year's Open promises to be a monumental event, with Tiger Woods aiming for his second major championship of the year and Jack Nicklaus making his final appearance at a major," said Eric Logan, executive vice president of programming at XM Satellite Radio. "St. Andrews is hallowed ground for golf fans, and XM will bring all of the action from the Old Course to our listeners across the U.S."
XM subscribers can listen to The Open Championship from coast to coast on a variety of satellite radios, including portable XM2go radios, the Delphi XM SKYFi2 plug-and play radio, and the Audiovox XR9 plug-and-play radio. In addition to playing XM, each of these radios has a sports ticker, which displays scores and other text information for golf, baseball, football, and other sports.
