NEW YORK, NY (April 12, 2005) - Since its launch on April 14, 2003, SIRIUS OutQ has been hailed for being the first live, nationwide and interactive medium for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community. Now the nation's first 24-hour radio service providing GLBT news, talk and entertainment celebrates its second year of broadcasting on Thursday, April 14, and the milestones it's achieved since its launch: national media recognition, major advertisers, and some very satisfied subscribers.
"SIRIUS OutQ listeners are not only part of the 15 million gay Americans and their families and friends, who've been underserved by radio until now," said Jay Clark, SIRIUS Executive Vice President of Programming. "A third of SIRIUS OutQ's listeners, who identify themselves as non-GLBT, also enjoy the perspective and the entertainment that OutQ provides."
SIRIUS OutQ has no counterpart on traditional or satellite radio, and, notably, 98% of OutQ listeners claim they have recommended SIRIUS to others because of it. National advertisers such as Subaru of America, Inc. are finding OutQ to be an attractive vehicle for their messages, as well.
Last summer during the Republican National Convention, SIRIUS OutQ made national headlines when United States Senate candidate Alan Keyes told afternoon host Michelangelo Signorile that Vice President Dick Cheney's lesbian daughter, Mary Cheney, was a "selfish hedonist." Keyes' daughter has since declared herself "a liberal queer" and was a guest on Signorile's show in February 2005, a day after revealing her sexuality to her parents and being cut off financially by them. Signorile also welcomed then-presidential candidate Howard Dean, who attacked President Bush's proposed constitutional amendment banning civil marriage for gay couples.
A key to SIRIUS OutQ's success is the variety of entertainment and information offered throughout the day. OutQ in the Morning, hosted by Cheryl Barcenas and former Billboard journalist Larry Flick, has welcomed celebrities including Lisa Marie Presley, Toni Braxton and Kelly Clarkson. Former Daily Show staple Frank DeCaro offers light-hearted fun and comedy on his morning/midday OutQ show, and hosted his own satirical awards show for under-appreciated gay media pioneers. Co-hosts Derek Hartley and Romaine Patterson (Derek & Romaine) present an over-the-top afternoon/evening show about sex, relationships and pop culture featuring a high level of listener participation. The John McMullen Show provides thought-provoking dialogue with guests and listeners each evening. And late nights and weekends are devoted to music by GLBT recording artists, headed up by SIRIUS OutQ music aficionados Jeremy Hovies and Charlie Dyer.
Off the air, SIRIUS OutQ hosts are active in numerous endeavors to support the gay community. Signorile, author of the groundbreaking book Queer in America: Sex, the Media and the Closets of Power , has an upcoming book, Hitting Hard: Michelangelo Signorile on George W. Bush, Mary Cheney, Gay Marriage, Tom Cruise, the Christian Right, and Sexual Hypocrisy in America , to be published in September. Patterson will see an October publication of her first book, The Whole World Was Watching: Living in the Light of Matthew Shepard , about how the death of her friend Matthew Shepard prompted her gay rights and anti-hate activism.
Hartley and Patterson recently returned from emceeing the stage at Phoenix (AZ) Pride weekend. OutQ hosts will also be appearing at numerous other Pride events this year, including Charlotte, NC, Las Vegas, Atlanta, New York, Chicago and several west coast locales. |
